THE HUNGER GAMES

HITTING #1 AT THE BOX OFFICE

LATEST REVIEWS

'The Hunger Games' was always going to be huge. No one could be quite sure how huge exactly - there were plenty of people throwing numbers around, but nobody could say for sure. Since its release in Australia on Thursday, the film has been at #1 on the Australian box office, and has received unanimous reviews on how brilliant the movie is.

But the most surprising part of the release of 'The Hunger Games' in Australia is its box office takings - a massive $9 million here, putting us second to only the U.S. - surpassing the first instalment of 'Twilight', which took $5.4 million on its first weekend.

Though the film has had a huge amount of hype in the weeks leading up to its release, and some very smart marketing tactics, the question is, how far is this film able to go?

THE HUNGER GAMES - TRAILER

Not surprisingly, 'The Hunger Games' has been compared to its predecessors - 'Harry Potter' and 'Twilight'. While there is a clear connection with the success of all these book series in the young adult market, there is one thing that sets 'The Hunger Games' apart from the others - a strong storyline with interesting characters the audience can closely relate to. Although 'The Hunger Games' is touted as a sci-fi action flick, it doesn't have any vampires, werewolves or wizards, and the world Katniss occupies is not that dissimilar to our own. If anything, it's more a cautionary tale of where we could end up should things continue heading on a downward slope.

There's plenty more reasons why 'The Hunger Games' has become such a colossal hit - read Jess' review of the film here.
