YOUR NEW FAVOURITE KILLER DOLL

THEATRICAL REVIEW
By Chris Dos Santos
12th January 2023

The horror doll: a stable of the genre. Chucky, Annabelle, Jigsaw, Brahm - every couple of years, a new one comes along hoping to be added to the iconic list but few make it. Horror icon James Wan who, of course, rejuvenated the genre in the 2010s with 'The Conjuring' franchise, has teamed up with Blumhouse to pen the story of a new killer doll.

After the untimely death of her parents, Cady (Violet McGraw, 'Doctor Sleep', 'Black Widow') moves in with her Aunty Gemma (Allison Williams, 'Get Out', TV's 'Girls'). She works at Funki, a major toy company who has just made the hottest toy of the decade: an interactive plush that you can feed and talk to though a tablet app. While she has pressure from her boss, David (Ronny Chieng, 'Crazy Rich Asians', 'Long Story Short') to make a low-price module, Gemma has her heart set on making a newer higher tech doll. After seeing Cady sad and alone she pursues M3GAN, a life-like doll who can become a real friend. Cady becomes instantly close with the doll who helps her deal with her loss - but M3GAN takes the protection of her to new heights, becoming a killer toy!

SWITCH: 'M3GAN' TRAILER 2

'M3GAN' is the camp horror we have been waiting for. As the 2010s saw a more serious and darker jump scare tone added to the genre, this goes balls-to-the-wall fun over scares in the best way possible. From the moment the film opens it's clear this is going to be fun ride; from the dancing to kills, everything makes this the next iconic horror franchise. 'M3GAN's' impact has already stuck and, just like 'Smile' before it, people are eating this up. It's been validated by the ultimate praise - meme culture - and M3GAN is already this year's frontrunner for queer icon.

From the moment the film opens it's clear this is going to be fun ride; from the dancing to kills, everything makes this the next iconic horror franchise.

'M3GAN' has cemented itself as a new horror stable, bringing the kills and most importantly the camp. Horror is one of the few genres surviving at the box office in this post-pandemic world, and seeing this with a packed audience is easily the best viewing experience.
