RODEO DREAMS

★★★★

A PORTRAIT OF INDOMITABLE AUSTRALIAN YOUTH

SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL REVIEW

"If you win at Mount Isa, you are among the best of the best to participate in this sport."

Directed by Rhian Skirving and W.A.M. Bleakley and filmed over three years, 'Rodeo Dreams' follows four young Australian bull riders as they travel to North West Queensland to compete for a spot in the Mount Isa Mines Rodeo, the largest and richest rodeo in the southern hemisphere.

The Mount Isa mines have sponsored the rodeo for 66 years, the event bringing in approximately 25,000 visitors to the region, giving us some idea of the hugeness of the event, which comes under threat in 2024 when the company running it, Isa Rodeo, gets into financial trouble, loses touch with the community and goes into administration.

However, the community bands together to form a new company, Mount Isa Pro Rodeo, to ensure the annual event goes ahead in 2025, with a prize pool that was the biggest in the event's history.

With its iconic "candy cane stack", we are informed that Mount Isa is "one of the richest places in Australia and most isolated" due to a history of copper mining. "It's a workers' town, a metal town," an old-timey radio voiceover tells us before we are introduced to the young bull-riders.

Camicka (17) is a young woman from a broken home whose dream is to ride with the best of the best ("its tough, but it makes you strong," she muses) and finds community at the rodeo; Darcy (24) works in the local butcher, and is a young cowboy who is "here and ready to rodeo" (and still living at home, with a loving mum); Peter Jnr (17) is an Indigenous man who wants to live up to the proud bullriding legacy of his dad and hopes to put a few dollars back into his camp with a win; and clean-cut Donovan (24), who works a cattle farm with his grandparents and aspires to do better than third or fourth place. What they all have in common is a love of competition and the strength to continue and get back on their feet after each setback.

It's inspirational stuff and an eye-opening look at an important regional area. The film gives audiences an insight into the world of professional rodeo, showcasing both its dangers and the strong sense of community and tradition.

The documentary takes its time to introduce these compelling protagonists, lets the audience choose their favourite and then follows them as they compete in the famous open-air, red dirt arena over four days of non-stop rodeo action. Mount Isa's rodeo week is the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, meaning a roadshow of sideshows tag along, opening with a mardi gras street party in the town centre.

It's inspirational stuff and an eye-opening look at an important regional area (in addition to Doomadgee, Dalby and Cloncurry). The film gives audiences an insight into the world of professional rodeo, showcasing both its dangers and the strong sense of community and tradition. It dives into the complex relationships and dangerous sportsmanship inherent in the rodeo scene, providing viewers with an emotional ride and a deeper understanding of the cowboy ethos.

The rodeo is undeniably a different lifestyle. As the sun sets over a rocky copper ridgeline in this industrial outpost of remote Queensland, 'Rodeo Dreams' leaves the audience with a new perspective on a lesser-seen part of Australia and the indomitable spirit of this country's youth.
