In a small Lebanese village, Christians and Muslims live peacefully, the men even referring to each other as brothers. When the violence between the faiths in the capital and outlining areas begins to filter into their lives the smart, cunning and resourceful women of the village band together to distract their men in order to maintain their happy way of life; their plots are often achieved by humorous means with humorous results.
There’s no denying that the subject matter of the film is dark and depressing, but with an ironic lilt filmmaker and star Nadine Labaki manages to create a highly charming tale with a smattering of dance and song. However, the weight and pathos of the film is somewhat lost in what could have and should have been quite a poignant film in today’s age of faith, politics and civil wars.
WHERE DO WE GO NOW? - TRAILER
This film received a five minute standing ovation at the Toronto Film Festival, and rightfully so. The uniqueness of the film is definitely a drawcard. While it may not hit all of the marks cinematically it’s certainly worth a watch to see something so different in its narrative, storytelling and to support a female filmmaker.
