BOWLING FOR SOUP + FRANK TURNER & THE SLEEPING SOULS

It’s a bustling night at the UNSW campus. The pleasant weather, bringing out people playing sport or enjoying a stroll, sets the evening abuzz and fills me with energy by the time I reach the Roundhouse.

It’s in remarkable form for a Sunday, with a solid crowd standing by to see opening act Talk Heavy. Their short but spirited set gets the audience worked up and sets up an evening sure to be remembered.

Frank Turner arrives soon after like a flash, electric and pulsing, playing back-to-back classics despite reminding us he’s an "old man" (he’s only 44 years old) and shocking jet lag. Barely pausing for a breath, he weaves together a medley of much-loved tunes that engrosses the crowd and keeps a power flowing across the dance floor.

From a faithful performance of 'Photosynthesis' early in the piece, to crowd favourite 'Recovery' and a rambunctious rendition of 'Four Simple Words' to close the set, there’s little to fault this set. At every turn, Frank is there encouraging punters to move more, sing louder, dance faster, enjoy harder. Most of all, he calls on everyone to throw off their tiredness, their coolness, their inhibitions and participate to experience the maximum enjoyment.

While the segue from folk punk to alt-rock might not necessarily have been most people’s first thought, the audience didn’t seem to mind one bit as co-headliners Bowling for Soup took to the stage. Singer and lead guitarist Jaret Reddick and bassist Rob Felicetti brought a different atmosphere to the theatre, showing off with a double comedy act between tunes. This cheekiness complimenting their own well-known songs, with a surprise cover of 'Stacy’s Mom' setting the audience alight.

Three unique sets, three complimentary acts. With the spanning the enormity of this live event, it’s a fantastic way for music lovers to experience a night’s worth of artists. If you have the chance to experience Bowling For Soup + Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls as they trek around Australia, make sure you take up the chance to capture the memories - to quote Frank, "Hold close to the ones that you love, Because we won't all be here this time next year, So while you can take a picture of us".
