ADDITION

While 'Addition' is heavy on the rom-com, there's a little more to it that gives it some added dimension. Grace is convinced Seamus won't be able to handle her OCD, and even when she does eventually share it with him, it's not the entire situation. It's built on decades of trauma, which she's convinced herself she can carry on her own. It's not helped by her destructive relationship with her sister (Adrienne Pickering, TV's 'Rake', 'Knowing'), and exemplified by her long-running imaginary platonic relationship with Nikola Tesla (Eamon Farren, Netflix's 'The Witcher', 'Girl Asleep').

So it's upon a fairly unhealthy foundation (despite Seamus' obliviousness) upon which the pair build their relationship. Initially, Seamus is Grace's refuge, and we see her relaxing at the very sight of him, or pivoting from a panic attack to initiating "animalistic sex". It's therefore no surprise when the relationship begins heading toward unsteady ground.

What's most enjoyable about the film is watching the dynamic between Teresa Palmer and Joe Dempsie. There's a natural affinity between the two, and the interactions - the flirting - is honest and vibrant. They're two very experienced and charismatic actors who have a fantastic on-screen connection.

There's plenty more to like. Writer Becca Johnstone (in her feature film debut) has kept the script to a snappy 91 minutes, ensuring it moves along at a consistent pace. It takes Toni Jordan's 2008 novel and keeps the themes, heartwarming story and mental health issues intact. Director Marcelle Lunam ('Habana Shakes') takes that script and, working with DoP Gin Loane ('The Convert', 'The Breaker Upperers'), creates a beautiful-looking small-budget Australian film. There are times the graphics effects using the numbers are overused; we're already aware of Grace's situation and don't need the constant and misrepresentative visual reminder. Regardless, it's an accomplished romantic comedy. Sure, it might just be a rom-com, but it's a rom-com with a positive aesthetic and depth.

There's a lot to love about 'Addition': on the surface, it's a sweet story, stuffed with a surprisingly hearty centre. Carried by terrific performances from Teresa Palmer and Joe Dempsie, this is a fulfilling, rewarding watch from an Australian team. Embrace it and all its differences.
