SUPERGIRL

'Supergirl' follows Kara (Milly Alcock, HBO's 'House of the Dragon') who is celebrating her 23rd birthday with her dog Krypto. Unlike her cousin, she watched her family die on Krypton, making her much more jaded and more of an antihero when compared to Superman (David Corenswet, 'Twisters', 'Pearl'). Ruthye (Eve Ridley) is a young girl who witnessed her family's death at the hands of Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts, 'Amsterdam', 'Red Sparrow') and is looking for anyone to help her. When Krem injures Krypto, Kara has no choice but to track him and, in turn, helps Ruthye on her vengeance journey.

'Supergirl' is a great fun sci-fi action adventure. It has excellent set pieces and action beats that are exactly what we come to a blockbuster for. Milly Alcock, like David Corenswet, was born to play 'Supergirl'. You are there with her through each emotional beat; she is an extremely engaging lead.

'Supergirl', for me, only suffers because of its closeness to the release of 'Superman'. 'Superman' was such a game-changer in this genre that it's hard not to expect something just as impactful. That is a huge expectation to have, that the film just shouldn't be held to, and it's not because it's bad - far from it. 'Supergirl' is its own story with its own tone and style, and that's something that makes it stand out.

My only real problem with 'Supergirl' is Lobo; while Jason Momoa ('Aquaman', 'A Minecraft Movie') is great casting, he feels as if he's tonally in a different film. The character also has little impact on the main story, and just randomly drops in during action scenes for (I'm assuming) fan service. It feels like he's here because I'm sure someone at DC was saying, "But what about the men, will they see our female superhero film?" and someone suggested throwing Lobo in. He is fine, but does he need to be here - absolutely not. He has no impact on the plot, nor does he ever team up with any of the characters. His existence seems to be purely from a marketing perspective.

'Supergirl' is a really fun superhero action film led by a strong performance from Aussie Milly Alcock. It might not reach the heights of the DCU's debut film 'Superman', but 'Supergirl' finally gets her own movie, celebrating everything the world loves about her, and it only took 42 years to get this character properly portrayed on the big screen!
