The music of Cub Scouts is primarily littered with bright, cheerful tunes, and 'Paradise' is no exception. The single 'Pool!' says everything it needs in its title; this summery song is a high-diving adventure, exemplified by the exclamation mark. Title track 'Paradise' follows suit, with its enjoyable electronic beats and laid-back feel.
In addition to their sunnier tunes, the EP also has a balance of sombre songs. 'Shuffle' is a song of foreboding lonliness, with lead singer Tim Nelson's regular falsetto beautifully accompanied by Zoe Davis' dulcet tones. 'Write You A Letter' is a remarkably touching track, focusing on simplicity, both in lyrics and the predominant use of piano. Both of these songs stand out on the EP as dramatically contrasting and impressively juxtaposing to the band's regular fare.
What we've seen so far from Cub Scouts is impressive, but I get the feeling there's bigger and better things to come. 'Paradise' gives us a glimpse at the boundaries they're pushing. Their catchy lyrics and tunes will be sure to have you seeking out this up-and-coming band in the future.
