It was with bated breath that I hit the Play button on the new album 'Supermodel' from Foster The People. After the unfathomable success of their debut album, there were many whispers about this new offering - this was a different direction, almost unrecognisable, something that could alienate fans altogether.

It's true - this album is a few steps to the left of the band's previous work. It's safe to say this is a much more diverse album, both tonally and vociferously. There's also a lot less emphasis on the synth sounds and more on the band's performance. Nonetheless, it still has the same essence that Mark Foster and his collaborators brought together for 'Torches'.

From the outset, we're confronted in a fabulously frenetic way by the track 'Are You What You Want To Be?' - its erratic beat and hyperactive attitude are like a shot of adrenalin, and it's not hard to picture this as the opening number on Foster The People's next world tour.

FOSTER THE PEOPLE - COMING OF AGE

The new single 'Pseudologia Fantastica' is one of the few synth-laiden tracks featured on 'Supermodel', its tranquil melody an easy listen. It fits snugly around the suitably mellow and somewhat psychedelic 'Nevermind', like a lullaby sung to comfort a loved one.

Fans of 'Torches' will feel familiar ground with 'Best Friend', with an upbeat tempo and lyrics like "Sometimes I feel like I only dream in black and white" - as the tentpole track, this bubbly tune's catchy vocals, Mark's contagious attitude and a sparse amount of brass are designed to cushion the blow of some of the slower tracks which surround it.

The magnificently titled 'A Beginner's Guide To Destroying The Moon' is an aggressive yet reflective track, and seems a bit of an obtuse fit at first, while 'Goats In Trees' features Mark's vocals accompanied largely by acoustic guitar - a bit of an eerie experience for a Foster The People tune.

The good news is that 'Supermodel' is a worthy second album to 'Torches'.

This album is a step in the direction of a more organic sound for the band, whilst still retaining their most recognisable features - colourful, catchy storytelling and Mark Foster's unique voice. This doesn't have the congruency that the debut LP did, but it does further feature Foster The People's brilliant talents.

The good news is that 'Supermodel' is a worthy second album to 'Torches' - it's adventurous, bold and, at times, borderline genius. The great news is that Mark Foster has confirmed the band is headed back to Australia later this year - if you've seen Foster The People perform live, you'll know what this group is capable of on stage, and if you haven't... well, chances are you'll be jostling with fans old and new to secure your tickets.
