UNTOGETHER

★★

NOT EVEN THE CAST COULD KEEP THIS ONE TOGETHER

Do you love movies about douchey people, where they just get together and talk about all their artsy problems and how misunderstood they are? ‘Untogether’ is the latest is a long long line of pretentious films about pretentious people.

Andrea (Jamima Krike, TV’s ‘Girls’, ‘The Little Hours’) is a former teen prodigy who suffered from a heroin addiction. Now sober, she is attempting writing and meets Nick (Jamie Dornan, the ‘Fifty Shades’ franchise, ‘Robin Hood’) who has had success with his memoir, and the two have an affair. Her sister, Tara’s (Lola Kirke, ‘Gone Girl’, ‘American Made’) relationship with an older man, Martin (Ben Mendelsohn, ‘Ready Player One’, ‘Captain Marvel’), is shaken when she is drawn to an even older rabbi, David (Billy Crystal, ‘Monsters University’, ‘When Harry Met Sally’).

'UNTOGETHER' TRAILER

This movie wants to be deep and sexy while being deep and meaningful, but fails at both. It turns into a boring snoozefest; all the characters are bland and too full of themselves to even come close to being relatable.

Even though the characters are bland, all the actors are still giving it one hundred per cent. While they don’t save the film, they aren’t throwing the towel in. One very wild fact is that writer/director Emma Forrest’s ex-husband is Ben Mendelsohn, and I can’t imagine what that would have felt like on set. His character is also a bit of a douche, which is an interesting role to take if your ex-wife wrote it for you.

This movie wants to be deep and sexy while being deep and meaningful, but fails at both. It turns into a boring snoozefest; all the characters are bland and too full of themselves to even come close to being relatable.

Outside of the setup of the characters, not much else of note happens in the movie. It farts around to get to a suitable run time, then ends. The film gave me so very little that it's hard to get mad at it - it just existed before my eyes for ninety minutes.
