I love horror movies... it's a genre that opens the door to all manner of creative and dramatic elements, like monster designs, dreamlike settings and perilous set pieces. So I was stoked to learn that AMC Networks' Shudder recently made its premium subscription streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural available in Australia and New Zealand.
Shudder offers hundreds of hours of programming, including dozens of original and exclusive movies, documentaries and original series. I took a quick glance through the initial titles available and spotted a heap of critically-acclaimed flicks that I'd been dying to watch.
The immediate standouts included the Zoom-based 'Host', the most buzzed-about new horror film of the COVID-19 era; an apocalyptic drama 'The Beach House'; Indigenous zombie flick 'Blood Quantum'; a hitman thriller 'A Bluebird in My Heart'; the French dystopian sci-fi 'Jessica Forever'; a South Korean peroid action movie / creature feature titled 'Monstrum'; Argentinian spooker 'Terrified'; and Brazilian shocker 'The Nightshifter', set in a busy morgue in São Paolo. Greg Nicotero's anthology series 'Creepshow' (a continuation of the Stephen King / George A. Romero films) is in there, too.
Shudder is available on the web, iOS, Apple TV, Android and Android TV, and also FireTV in Australia. Plans start at just AU$5.83 or NZ$6.67. There's also an option for a free 7-day trial. Until the 31st of August 2020, new members can get 20% off their first year when they sign up for an annual subscription with promo code SHUDDERANZ at www.shudder.com.
